ITU Department of Data Science and Analytics

The Department of Data Science and Analytics, established in 2024 within the Faculty of Management at Istanbul Technical University (ITU), commenced its undergraduate education the same year with a quota of 30 students via the 2024 Higher Education Institutions Exam (YKS). The medium of instruction is 100% English, and all courses will be conducted at ITU's Maçka campus.

Data science and analytics is an exciting and future-oriented discipline that enables you to interpret complex datasets and derive valuable insights. Beyond designing and implementing complex algorithms, it also involves interpreting results to support strategic decision-making in businesses and institutions. It plays a crucial role in diverse domains such as analyzing marketing trends, understanding customer behavior, predicting financial risks, and diagnosing diseases.

Our program focuses on developing students’ analytical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills—providing a unique opportunity to become pioneers in a rapidly evolving field.

Curriculum

Our department offers a carefully designed curriculum aimed at providing students with a comprehensive and in-depth education in data science and analytics. Combining disciplines such as mathematics, statistics, computer science, and management, the program equips students with the skills to analyze complex data sets, extract meaningful insights, and develop effective solutions.

The program is structured to build a solid foundation in data science and analytics.

In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge in mathematics and programming through courses such as Mathematics I & II, Discrete Mathematics, Fundamentals of Algorithms and Programming, and Object-Oriented Programming. Introduction to Data Science and Analytics familiarizes students with key concepts and principles, while Fundamentals of Linux provides essential IT infrastructure knowledge for data science applications.

In the second year, students enhance their analytical and problem-solving skills with courses such as Probability Theory, Linear Algebra, and Statistics. Data Visualization teaches how to effectively present complex data, while Database Management Systems and Data Structures and Algorithms build competencies in data storage, management, and querying. Courses like Data Analytics and Deterministic and Stochastic Models in Data Science introduce modeling techniques commonly used to solve real-world business problems.

In the third and fourth years, students specialize in advanced topics such as Deep Learning, Machine Learning, and Signal and Image Analytics. Electives such as Big Data and Analytics, Internet of Things, Cybersecurity, and Cloud Computing offer opportunities for in-depth study and industry-focused knowledge in trending domains.
